Well I installed the BIND update today, but I don't think this is related.
Instead, Mindspring dropped one of my connections this afternoon, right as I
executed a command <it was either "list" or "ps aux">... I think that did a
number on something, because ever since a "ps aux" will sort everything my
userID instead of by PID.. <everything is upside-down>..
At first I noticed my system time was running 5 hours ahead.. I thought it
was a time issue.. But I've just discovered this error while trying to
perform a "top" command:
bad data in /var/run/utmp
I found one other reference to this same issue in the archives, but no
follow-up suggestions... man utmp and man ps offer *plenty* of details about
each, but they don?t offer much on ?bad data in utmp? It does say:
Note: that the utmp struct from libc5 has changed in libc6. Because of
this, binaries using the old libc5 struct will corrupt
/var/run/utmp and/or /var/log/wtmp.
But again the only thing new to the box in the last several weeks is the
BIND update..
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with this issue... I thought
about just deleting the utmp file, but then again.... <been there, done
that> - better to seek the wisdom of those who know better <first>... :-)
