you`re right. it is not invoked by sendmail, as it does not update
/etc/sendmail.cf.

i downloaded that from ftp://ftp.cobaltnet.com/pub/contrib/binaries/,
too,
but using rpm it showed up as mentioned before. greetings to the package
maintainer...

thank you for the info !
in the meantime, i solved the problem using pop-b4-smtp 1.2-4, nothing
documented.
1) downgraded to 1.2, which downgraded qpopper to 2.53 as well. cool.
2) tried to reinstall the qpopper-3.02-package, no success
3) reinstalled the broken 1.3pre?, which re-upgraded to qpopper-3.02
4) deinstalled 1.3.pre? by running the uninstall script in
/var/lib/cobalt/uninstallers/, qpopper.3-02 remained on the system
5) installed 1.2-4, now it seems to work
the README in ftp://ftp.cobaltnet.com/pub/contrib/binaries/, as of
23-08-2000, does not even mention 1.2-4, it tells instead that only
version 1.3 upgrades to qpopper-3.02. it is not even claimed as unstable
or alpha, but as "early".
cool. greetings to the package maintainer...
why don`t they move version 1.3pre-whatever to /pub/drunk/ or
/pub/stoned or something else ?
estimated time for solving only this problem, including unsuccessful
search in the knowledge base (which does not mention version 1.2-4 as
well) and the archives : about 5 hours
-> added up all time for solving Cobalt specific problems in the last
year : enough for learning to configure a mainstream Linux distribution
or Unix by myself, maybe using Webmin, so :
7) decision : this was my first and last Cobalt; next server might be a
Sun Netra X1
8) Sun : Netra X1 has ONLY AC power, no DC available. We in Europe have
only DC (at least, we have something, not like California, which doesn`t
have neither AC nor DC ;-)
9) brainstorming : Compaq, IBM, Pyramid, BSDi, VA and all others _DO_
have DC...
