I have had the very same thing .. on and off through out the day I have times where the mail will POP very very slowly and even say the server is not available .. however its there via the www .. sending can take a long time as well on and off .. I got something like that with one of my computer at home running linux mandrake. I find that the problem was each time i run something linux put the application on the cache memory and never clean it, so after sometime to machine was so slow that i have to reboot-it. The only way i find to fix it was by updating the kernel to 2.4, but not sure that is a good idea to this on your raq. Good way to know if it's the same problem log on in telnet check your memory usage, run some application check again. If it's that you go na see that whatever you do your free memory go na take less and less place.
