Safer to su to the user name if you know his/her password. If not,
first su to root, then immediately to the username, which won't require
the user's password. The less you actually do as root the better.

Maybe not. Maybe the reason you're looking at it is to find out why it
locks up your user's email program whenever s/he tries to download it
<wry grin>.
