I had problems similar to what you describe.  I installed all new ver. 3.x.x
files, so I don't know which one caused all my problems.
What I experienced was that the workgroup was no longer visible on clients.
the server was essentially un available except for mail and DHCP.
I called and obtained an incident number from COBALT and never heard from
them again. No support whosoever!  I looked thru hundreds of user group
mails and nothing useable.
After several days I was still not able to get into the group folders.  I
had to remove/erase all groups, re-enter new groups and then was able to
restore group folders from client disks.  The server was hung up after this
for about 40 hours.  Now it finally resolved all the new changes and is
working properly for the present time being.
