Go the Cobalt Developer's List. On this one, I doubt anyone has the answers.
Most of us couldn't possibly care less...we just want the thing to work.
I can offer a few comments: the BIOS (what you call firmware) spins up the
hard drive and goes looking into the MBR (Master Boot Record). LILO (Linux
Loader) is in there, and it knows how to find the kernel.
This is, at its lower levels, close to a standard Linux system.
