RE: [cobalt-users] [RAQ4] Server Stops Responding everyday -(regular freezes)

All,

Stephan is describing the same problem I am having on my RAQ3. I see the same messages in the log....

a broken pipe from telnetd over and over, every fifteen minutes. The cron.quarter-hourly runs parts, but I cannot see it in the directory. Also the local ftp session closed message.

MESSAGES
Dec 23 11:00:07 bosnia telnetd[23074]: ttloop: read: Broken pipe
Dec 23 11:15:01 bosnia proftpd[23663]: bosnia.sitecraft.net (localhost[127.0.0.1
]) - FTP session closed.
Dec 23 11:15:07 bosnia telnetd[23667]: ttloop: read: Broken pipe
Dec 26 10:20:51 bosnia syslogd 1.3-3: restart.

CRON
root (12/23-11:18:00-23783) CMD (run-parts /etc/cron.quarter-hourly)
root (12/23-11:20:00-23861) CMD ( /sbin/rmmod -as)
CRON (12/26-10:20:53-299) STARTUP (fork ok)
root (12/26-10:30:00-898) CMD (/usr/local/sbin/swatch >>/var/cobalt/adm.log 2>&1
)

I do not think this is a log rotation issue. The server has very few sites and gets almost no traffic. It is a development server and has no mission critical sites on it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

S

Jens,

I have often had to change the log rotation system on RaQs, when they
start getting so much traffic that the log rotation system simply make
the server hang.

Seems to fit in with my thoughts, although (I'm playing devils advocate
here) the server hasn't been receiving any more traffic than usual! Could
this be a cumulative thing? Plus since it's a standard thing on RAQs I'm
surprised there hasn't been a fix done by Cobalt yet?

Set up a small script that watches your server and saves information
to a file. Then you can just view that file after the hang.

OK, this is where I profess to having a lack of Unix knowledge. Could you
help me write a script for this?

BTW! Thanks for your help on this!
