> I have noticed the same problem as everyone else. In my case, connectingvia FTP is extremely slow (In somecases up to 4 minutes). However, once I'm connected the file transfers are as fast as they should be. It almost looks like like a port 21 problem. I just don't know. Any suggestions? Thanx. Most likely your dialup provider does not have reverse DNS setup correctly. FTP servers check the reverse to put it in the log. Next time you get connected to your ISP, telnet to your box and do nslookup your.ip.address.here if you get what looks like a FQDN, you are ok, but if you get nothing back then that is why authentication is taking so long.
Maybe I'm a bit dense on this topic. But since I'm doing my own primary DNS on the Cobalt, and my own secondary DNS on an NT box and both have forward and reverse settings running I'm still having poor connection speed. BUT, the transfer speeds are magnificent once I actually get to the folder I want.
And I'm hooked up thru ADSL and have tried this from numerous other locations. No slow modems are involved.
