[cobalt-users] Directory Jailing
- Subject: [cobalt-users] Directory Jailing

- Date: Thu Dec 7 17:07:01 2000
- List-id: Mailing list for users to share thoughts on Cobalt products. <cobalt-users.list.cobalt.com>
I changed a few user setttings to FTP login to /home/sites as they should
have easy access to a variety of our web hosting clients, but should not
have any access to any files above the /home/sites. I would like to jail
them to this directory on their FTP login. Could anyone possible let me know
how to do that? I appreciate your help.

Subject: [cobalt-users] Deleting SSL Test Certificate?
Reply-To: cobalt-users@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Hi folks
I have just installed a new Thawte SSL certificate, but get the following
error message when typing in the appropriate https URL for the certificate
in a browser:
"Unable to create a secure connection...The identity certificate issuer is
unknown..."
I checked Netscape's browser security info and it seems to point to an
earlier test certificate I had installed. I thought I had deleted this
before I started a new CSR and then pasted in my new SSL certificate.
Thawte's website implies I need to edit my Apache configuration - any ideas
how I might get the new certificate to work properly?
Just to recap, I did generate a Thawte test certificate about a month ago,
but deleted this from the RaQ4 SSL settings before generating another CSR in
readiness for the new Thawte SSL certificate I've just bought and installed.
The new certificate shows up correctly in the RaQ control panel.
Any advice appreciated!

Subject: [cobalt-users] Need Help Determining Qube2 Modem Connection Speed
Reply-To: cobalt-users@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
We are using a Qube2 in conjunction with an external 3Com U.S. Robotics
56K/14.4K V90 modem, attached to the serial port, to connect with our
ISP. We have modified the port speed setting in the diald.conf file from
115,200 KBPS to 57,600, hoping that would help alleviate the extreme
sluggishness of our connection - to no avail unfortunately.
We used to use Internet sharing software (Virtual Motion Internet
LanBridge), which was actually faster at times (though much less
reliable) that our Qube, so we are at a loss to explain the
sluggishness. In particular, we would like to know how to monitor the
connection speed between the Qube and our ISP when we're connected (are
there commands we can issue from a telnet session that will do that for
us?), and ideally we would like to be able to measure the throughput
(KBPS) of that connection to make sure that at least part of the problem
isn't due to local LAN traffic.
Is there anyone out there that can help us?
Thanks!

Put it in srm.conf or the beginning area of httpd.conf, it will get
inherited by all the virtual host blocks...

Thank you for the tip, unfortunately it still doesn't work -
I'm getting the old error message with "failed dependencies".
I'm getting this error message on another RaQ3, too. Is there
a problem with that rpm or the way I tried to install it?
Thanx,

Well, i'd note that by the time you see something in the logs you're
probably already in trouble -/
/var/log
maillog - stuff from sendmail
secure - logins (doesn't list errors unfortunatly)
xferlog - ftp uploads/downloads
samba - win shares
messages - system / kernel messages and just about everything else
httpd/access system wide web logs
httpd/error logs of errors serving web pages
httpd/adm_access GUI access logs
all of the above files get archived occasionally btw, the .1.gz versions
contain the older parts...
also running 'last' will tell you about recent logins (wtmp is in a
compressed format)

I've had a look at the pam config on my Qube and it looks like the
libraries support shadow passwords. In addition, the shadow tools exist on
the system.
If you want to I suspect you could enable shadow passwords on the system.
However, be aware that if you don't know what you're doing then it's a
very good way to totally hose all access to the box.

If you bought a used RaQ I would highly suggest forking out the $99 to
Cobalt for the restore CD and restoring the server to factory
default. That way you don't have to deal with all of the things that the
last guy broke. And especially if the drive died, your going to want to
restore all the OS stuff that makes the cobalt work.

I'll be unable to use Cart32 (switching from NT to RAQ 4ri), I'm definitely

Please offer any other suggestions if you can.

While this looks very interesting, I feel in all fairness I must point
out this paragraph I found on their site:
Resale or hosting license
Please note that none of the licenses above are for resale,
redistribution, or hosting services. Please contact us for special
arrangements if you are interested in purchasing this type of
license. You must have special arrangements for any reselling,
redistribution, or use on a hosting service of Merchant OrderForm

Wayne,
Did you install this on your Cobalt? It discusses an NT requirement....
>From storefront.net:
The NT IIS server operating system contains the resources needed to execute
the StoreFront application. NT IIS is able to perform the necessary data
connectivity and mathematical functions required by the StoreFront
application. If your current web host provider does not support the NT IIS

Hey Carrie!
I went off list since it's hot enough in there right now.
Who are you registering with now? We're still using Network Solutions
but, like you say, they are getting very restrictive on new domains
and it's becoming much much more tiresome to do stuff with them. Are
you using someone else you can recommend?
We do a few of these new domains a month and I sure would like to
make my own life a tad simpler.
Thanks

You can park all the sites you want BUT those parked domains cannot
receive email, as Dan pointed out. Raq runs email off web sites...no
other way without really hacking the software.
Anyway, you can park sites by adding aliases to a file called
/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and I would suggest you take a look at the
Apache documentation on the Apache site to see how to do that. It's
very easy to do by Telnetting in and using a text editor. Just some
additions to the line.
If the Apache instructions don't help or you have any other
questions, email me off-list and I'll try to help you. This has been
covered a whole bunch of times here and maybe we shouldn't take up
more space with it.

I have several clients that use the cart by PDG Software and seem to really
like it.
www.pdgsoft.com
They have a version for Raqs that retails for about $750 with
resellers/ISP's getting for about $350.00 if I remember right.
It was fairly easy to set up and simple to include the calls into existing
or new sites.
