I think I had a similar experience.  After I replaced the old certificate
with the one issued by Thawte, the GUI indicated that the server was
restarting.  According to the manual, it was supposed to work.  After some
wasted time and the additional $50 I had to pay for reissuance of the
certificate (you see, I regenerated the Certificate Request after deleting
everything :-| after a short online chat with Thawte tech support...).

Anyway to make the stroy short, I solved the problem by telneting in and
restarting the server manually.  It worked right away.  Apparently the GUI
was not effectively restarting the server.
