the domain is in the soa. obvious or? anyway, the cobalt systems seem to
not need any mx records if the system is setup the way I'm informed of. To
say it is apparently not an mx issue (something I have never heard of, and I
have been with bind since 4.03) . Is what I'm hearing bs or what. I
couldn't believe it myself but I thought I would ask before I shot off my
mouth.

Well, you're not telling us what domain is "failing" for pop and you
didn't give us the error message (both of which are important to
know) but the first place to look, usually, isn't dns (if everything
else is working), it's the mx records.
Briefly, make sure you mx record is set this way:
domain.com -----------> domain.com
don't put any hostname in your mx records. Then go to the web site
itself and check "email for this domain". Now any email sent to a
valid user on that domain will get there -- the address can be
user@xxxxxxxxxx (not www is necessary). If that's not helpful, give
us the information I described above.
