You did have the right file but it should go at the bottom of the file like this:
  # accept-email-at-domain routes
  @x.y.z      %1@xxxxxxx

For example, if you have named your box mail.mailbox.com and the alias would be
alias.mail.box.z the string would be as following:
  @mail.mailbox.com       %1@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
