top does not help as it gives you only a snapshot of the moment it is
running.
if the problem results from qpopper, there is another pop3-server in
/usr/sbin called ipop3d. it is undocumented however, seems to be from
the gnu project, but i`m not sure. did not hear about any recent
security concerns. i`m using it internally for testing purposes, it`s
okay, but i don`t know how it will perform under heavy load.
maybe sooner or later i`ll replace my qpopper with it, but i don`t find
any useful information about it...
