I've also seen the same thing happen, most likely due to the vaguaries of
DNS, especially if there are outside dependencies and latency is involved.
To correct the situation, its far better to indicate the actual IP address
or subnet of the remote host you want to allow to relay. This isn't
always possible, but if they're on a network with static IP's, it works
just great. Its in the docs somewhere, but basically if the remote host's
IP addy is xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, all you put in the relay field is the first
three octets, i.e. xxx.xxx.xxx (no trailing period), and anyone with an IP
address in that range will be able to relay just fine. You can't do this
with anything larger than a /24 though. This fixed everything for me.
