Um, this sounds a bit questionable to me... 100 hits a minute starting at midnight? A single defunct web site? Logs not being generated? I suggest you make sure you are not experiencing some form of a denial of service attack. Check /var/log/httpd/access to verify that these splurge hits are not coming from the same set of sources.
We checked the access logs. Everyone we could find. The rate of hits various widely from minute to minute. The peak was around lunch today and has now curbed off. There were not 100 per minute last night. That is when the hits started. The incresaed sharply this AM and continued to increase up to lunch. They are now down to a couple of hundred every 5-10 minutes.
The logs show that these hits are coming from a wide variety of places. Not the sign a DOS attack. We have verified with our ISP who colocates the server for us and he backs us up on the fact that the hits are legit.
It was a good suggestion but not what we are looking for. Thanks James
