[cobalt-users] Re: looking at a site before domain is transferred

Here's another question, if you have a moment.
When adding a client who is *transferring* from another host and they have
their own IP; should I leave the reverse off until the name propogates?

Oh, you know what? If you have an IP-based domain, you have another option! I understand that you're saying you're going to assign ONE site to this IP number, right?

In that case, do your web site with the record that you'll eventually be assigning to that site -- i.e. the final url and domain name and all that.

Now, you CAN do your dns with the IP pointing to that url provided that this is the only site on that IP address. You don't have to do that "test" site url at all. Just set it as you would finally.

Then, to view the site, you can url to that IP address and the site will come up.

But you don't even have to set the reverse record in that case! Raq, when given an IP address, will look at /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and look under that IP number and default to the first site it finds. If the site you're talking about is the only one under that IP number, it will go right to the site -- doesn't need the reverse pointer at all. Just type in the IP number.

Some people don't like setting reverse IP to a virtual site. They prefer to reserve that for things like the dns server. I really haven't encountered any problems with it but maybe someone else on the list can jump in if they have.

The test site trick I described is necessary ONLY when you're using name-based virtual hosts. Since a bunch of sites use the same IP address in that approach, the machine won't know where to point to once it's told the IP number.
