Samba on the original Qube 2700WG did use cleartext passwords and you had to
apply this Reg Patch to WinNT and Win9x to get them to work.

Samba on a Qube 2 does NOT use cleartext passwords.  I think the Windows ME
thing is a red herring.

Have a look at /etc/smb.conf ... you should find a line in the global
section which indicates that encrypted passwords are used.
