IMAP is designed to allow multiple clients on multiples computers to
get the same emails. Ie, it's not done for a single user that wants
to read his emails offline, but for a wider use. It's more
complicated (and more powerful) than POP.
However, for most cases, these extra functionnalities are not needed.
If your clients use POP, then go and disable IMAP.
You might want to look at http://www.imap.org for further details.
Hope that helps,
Fabrice Prémel.
