After being a Unix admin for almost 10 years now, and managing at least 40
raqs currently, I can assure you that an ultra sparc running under Solaris
can do more and is more stable than any cobalt raq.
I agree... to an extent; having been using solaris based boxes for much
longer than cobalt raqs (15x recently acquired raq3s v 4x well used
UltraSPARC-II based boxes) imho sparc offers a more comprehensive package..
but.. people choose cobalt raqs for 2 fundementally different reasons in
general):
1. Price
2. Linux
We weighed up the pros & cons before purchasing the raqs and we couldn't be
happier with their performance.
I Do think they should offer a Linux and a Solaris
raq, that would mean that people had a choice. If you want to make a
statement to SUN make that one
100% Agreement there.
and allow sun to help cobalt with their less than perfect track
record of poor hardware
I must say that I don't have to much to gripe about the raqs (yet?) but I
can't let you get away with giving the impression that Sun's backup support
is perfect! We have cursed their warranties and tech support on many
occasions! And, in general, consider much of their overall service as less
than adequate (based on our own experience only! (no law suits please!)).
At the end of the day it's a matter of choice (and market forces).
Personally I see this as a way for sun to gain on their rivals turf, and who
knows, they may even end up pushing Linux full steam ahead in a ruse to
dampen MS!!
