there are several possibilities, scp is the most secure in my opinion.
you can search the list archives, some months ago someone posted
instructions doing a similar thing using ftpbackup (search for
"ftpbackup").
read the whole thread to be informed about the existing security risks
of that solution; if you don`t matter, if works fine. it would be better
to use cpio instead of tar if you rely only on that for backup.
