You seem to have bumped into the "Cobalt Zone"..*hear the scary music?

What you've described happened to me to...after the update, and yes 
rebooting fixed it..but only temporarily. I had installed the latest 
POP-before-relay patch and the qpopper security fix and the lock files 
began to appear. These were intermittent,  but the appearance of the .lock 
files seemed to correspond to times when I was using the GUI..hitting some 
save button. The times were almost simultaneous. No answer could be given, 
but I installed this the day it came out..(below I've copied text from a 
message sent by Jeff Lovell)

post update 3.0. Some systems would experience problems
retrieving their email via POP, reporting an error
with lock files. This RPM should elevate those errors.

o Download the RPM from:
ftp://ftp.cobaltnet.com/pub/experimental/RPMS/qpopper-3.0.2-C6.mips.rpm

o Run as root:
rpm -U

It seems to have fixed my .lock problems so I'm no longer paranoid about 
using the GUI
