Do you have the rpm executable?
Is /bin in your path?

[admin admin]$ which rpm | xargs md5sum
37714c42c0f062d01da533e4c3b2d060  /bin/rpm
[admin admin]$ /bin/rpm --version
RPM version 2.5.5
[admin admin]$ echo $PATH
/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin
[admin admin]$
