Long time reader, first time poster so here goes.
I'm trying to figure out the best solution for DNS for my needs. I have a
RaQ3i at a remote location where I lease racking services and
bandwidth. On the one machine I plan to host up to 200 sites and so I've
got a deal with a registrar for bulk discounts on domain names. I've tried
a few different approaches to DNS management with varying degrees of
satisfaction/success, whichever I choose I want to commit to for at least a
year. I'm trying to keep my overhead low so buying another machine to act
as the DNS server is not feasible at this point.
I'm curious to find what others in similar situations are doing. Neither
the rackers nor the registrars seem to be able to handle DNS that don't
point to their own machines. I've looked at DNS management services but
they charge around $25-50 per DNS per year. I've also looked at The Public
DNS service (soa.granitecanyon.com) but there seems to be an ethical
question about using this service for commercial sites.
Is it worth setting up the DNS service on my RaQ considering the use it's
going to get full of (small) web sites? Any other solutions out there?
Your feedback is important to me so any response no matter how depressing
will be read and well considered.
Thanks in advance,
Howard
