[cobalt-users] Updating a Qube2 (or other Cobalt box)

I didn't see this anywhere in the archives or in Cobalt's resources, and wanted to put it out as an FYI for future new Cobalt users.

We recently purchased a Qube2. Someone on this list recently posted the URL http://ftp.cobalt.com/pub/packages/qube2/eng as a source for updates. When I visited the URL, I realized that I did not know which updates I should apply, so I asked Cobalt.

The first thing that I noted was that the files listed in my browser window at the above URL were in alphabetical order by filename, not in chronological order. Listing in chronological order, the available files were:

CobaltUpdate-Qube2-1.0.pkg 10-Oct-1999 22:13 1.1M
Qube2-Infoplace-2.1.pkg 29-Dec-1999 18:29 9k
Qube2-Security-1.0.pkg 10-Oct-1999 22:13 119k
Qube2-Security-1.2.pkg 10-Oct-1999 22:13 113k
Qube2-Update-OS-2.0.pkg 10-Oct-1999 22:13 10.0M
ShellHistoryPatch-1.1.pkg 10-Oct-1999 22:13 3k
mfg052799.pkg 10-Oct-1999 22:13 1k
Qube2-Security-2.0.pkg 01-Nov-1999 14:32 4k
Qube2-Security-2.1.pkg 30-Nov-1999 20:38 33k
Qube2-Security-2.2.pkg 30-Nov-1999 20:57 122k
Qube2-Security-2.3.pkg 13-Jan-2000 19:52 53k
All-Kernel_mips-1.0.pkg 13-Jan-2000 20:23 1.6M
Qube2-Security-2.4.pkg 27-Mar-2000 16:00 297k
Qube2-Security-2.5.pkg 27-Mar-2000 16:24 834k
Qube2-Security-2.6.pkg 04-Feb-2000 19:22 10k
Qube2-Security-2.7.pkg 13-Jan-2000 19:38 2k
Qube2-Security-2.8.pkg 12-Apr-2000 17:17 118k
Qube2-en-OSUpdate-3.0.pkg 30-Jun-2000 04:22 5.0M
Qube2-All-System-3.0.1-6541.pkg 09-Aug-2000 21:09 2k
Qube2-All-Security-3.0.1-6579.pkg 14-Aug-2000 16:02 78k
Qube2-All-Security-3.0.1-6682.pkg 21-Aug-2000 17:46 63k

To determine what software was already on my machine, I went to the Administrator site for the Qube2, went to the Maintenance area, and selected Install Software from the menu at the top of the screen. The box at the bottom of the screen lists the software installed on the computer. I had the following on my box:

Cobalt OS release 4
POP-Authenticated SMTP Relaying Release 1.2
Qube2-security release 2.1
Qube2-update-OS release 2.0

From my correspondence with Cobalt, I believe that OS Updates will fix all of the issues that had been fixed by earlier patches. Thus, if I install Qube2-en-OSUpdate-3.0.pkg, I do not need to install Qube2-Security-2.8.pkg or any earlier patches. However, non-OS Updates do not fix all of the issues that had been fixed by earlier patches. Thus, if I install Qube2-All-Security-3.0.1-6682.pkg, I still need to install Qube2-All-Security-3.0.1-6579.pkg. With these two rules, I decided that I needed to install:

Qube2-en-OSUpdate-3.0.pkg 30-Jun-2000 04:22 5.0M
Qube2-All-System-3.0.1-6541.pkg 09-Aug-2000 21:09 2k
Qube2-All-Security-3.0.1-6579.pkg 14-Aug-2000 16:02 78k
Qube2-All-Security-3.0.1-6682.pkg 21-Aug-2000 17:46 63k

This was confirmed by Cobalt support.
