Hello, everyone!
We recently noticed a massive increase in hacking attempts on our RaQ. This
is why we want to limit access to FTP and Telnet (it's open as a backup
until we are certain SSH works safely and reliably) to only the ISPs of our
staff members.
Therefore I added in etc/hosts.deny:
in.telnetd : ALL
in.proftpd : ALL
and saved the file. However, despite this which should disable all access
to the server through Telnet and FTP, both still are open. One can still
easily log into our server through FTP, even though hosts.allow is still empty.
I tried 'killall -HUP idetd' but it didn't change anything.
I also checked /etc/inetd.conf and made sure that both telnet and ftp go
through tcpd, which they do as supposed.
Does anyone have an Idea what the reason for this could be?
Thank you for your help!
Colin Weiss
