RE: [cobalt-users] Settings for email relaying

Peter,

you may want the user to tell you their IP address while they're conencted.
That way you simply open up their connection to relay, or add their
subdomain, not including the last octect of their IP. (ie., add relay for
123.132.10 when their IP is 123.132.10.45)

This will minimize the "open-ness" of your relaying, and also limit the
relaying to his connection. If he redials while he's away, it's likely that
he'll be in the same subdomain, and still be able to relay while he's away.

With WinNT/2000 machines, use "ipconfig" at the Command Prompt. Use
File..Run..."winipcfg" (make sure they choose PPP adapter) on the Win95/98
machines though. On the Macs, they'll need to open their TCP/IP from the
Control Panel.

To be overly cautious would be to allow only his IP address, though that
would require you to add his new IP if DHCP gives him a new lease, or if he
redials. You'd also want to remove the IP address not used anymore, and that
no longer needs relaying.

Subject: [cobalt-users] Settings for email relaying

I have one remote user that needs to be able to send and receive email
through our server. He will be travelling occasionally. Currently, he is
able to receive email through the server, but cannot send -- he gets a
relay error. He is using Earthlink as his ISP. I understand that I can
set up the server to relay mail from Earthlink.net, but would prefer not to
open things up quite so much. Is there a way to enable relaying for this
one person? My worry is that at some point we'll hire someone who will
want access through spamnet.com or some such.

Am I justified in not wanting to open relaying to a big ISP?

Another thing, the documents I found at Cobalt mention asking for a limited
set of IP addresses to enable (rather than enabling an entire domain). Who
do I contact for these addresses?

Peter
