Re: [cobalt-users] [Fwd: ie failing erratically with ssl]

Ahoy Brian

HEY -- YOU MEAN IT ISN'T ONLY ME??!!

Oh, this is such a relief. I thought I was going nuts.

I went around and around with Cobalt over just this thing for months and
months. Got exactly nowhere with them (of course). I even got on the warpath
and, after a week on the phone, persuaded someone at the front desk to go in
the back and physically bring Ray Yip to the phone. After a long and
pointless conversation (during which he had the cheek to tell me that they
had instituted a 24 hour turn-around on all email to tech support there) it
all came to nought. They could not repeat the problem. They did not follow
through.

Here's what it looks like:

* It happens erratically
* It happens when you dawdle over a secure form
* It only happens with SSL
* It happens when you submit the form
* Netscape 4.04 would just not go anywhere
* IE4 would hit a 404 from the server
* IE5 would spit out, first, a warning that you were leaving a secure site,
then its own local 404
* If you reload or try again, regardless which browser, your form goes right
through

My very helpful VAR set up a new, clean RaQ3, on which we tested thoroughly,
patch by patch. Turns out that this strange error appears as soon as you
install the OS2 patch. We cleaned off and reinstalled each patch several
times over two weeks and very definitely got it narrowed down to that
specific patch.

But then what? Our repeated messages to Cobalt telling them that we had
found the difficulty were, as always, ignored. Our requests for a list of
elements included in the patch which might be related were ignored. We
cannot get them to identify which element(s) of their patch might be
involved in the error, much less to issue us a patch without those elements,
or element by element, so that we could try to narrow it down further. And
if we were to finally identify exactly which little piece is at fault, what
is the chance that they would respond with a fix?
