My solution, which might be scaleable down for you :)
Catalyst 2900 XL series switch, each port linked to a NetGear FS524 24-port
100Mbit switch (these are great, and a good price at around $500 US) for the
primary network. The secondary ethernet ports on the 3i's are hooked up to
Netgear DS524 stackable hubs, for the nightly RAID backup..
I do that for each rack of RaQ's (believe me, try to explain that in
Japanese, it's funny). With 2 2900XL's, you can manage up to 12 full Racks
of 23 cobalts each.(yeah, 23 is a strange number, but it looks nice all set
up)
Whatever you get, try to think ahead. A small 8 port switch may be good
now, but what if you need to expand later.. Jumps up to the next level are
usually a small price to pay now, and you save the headache later.
Also, if you want to handle any type of traffic, get a switch, which won't
overload the whole network with broadcast packets.
