If the port your server is currently plugged into is providing full duplex
service then a hub would drop that down to half duplex.
A switch would not and it would also isolate most of the traffic between
your servers (if any) from the channel the internet traffic is coming in
on.
But, if you're only getting a half duplex connection (I.e., your port
connects to a hub rather than a switch) and you're well within the ethernet
length limits then having a switch of your own would buy you very little.
The safest choice is a fast switch that can service any mixture of 10/100
Mbps, full and half duplex connections.
