Hi there, I'm doing the brave/stupid thing and installing (partially) Oracle
8i on
a RaQ3i, so it can act as an SSL webserver for the WebDB cgi gateway. I'm
not running
the database on it, so please don't give me grief about my intentions.
WebDB is just
strange enough that it requires me to have a partial Oracle install in order
to install
the WebDB CGI on the webserver.. ugh.. So, I need to install X-Windows to do
so..
Knowing all this, I set out upon the archives, and the list, and somewhere
along the way encountered a PDF file that appears to be poorly written
instructions on how to install Oracle on a RaQ3i. It's a "Developer
Technical Note", Draft: DTN-5 Revision 0-1, dated April 2000. Anyone know
where it originated??
So, first problem encountered:
1.3 "To run Oracle 8i on the Cobalt RaQ3i, you must replace the standard
RaQ3i kernel with one that has been modified to accomodate Oracle: go to
ftp://ftp.cobaltnet/pub/developer/oracle."
-- Okay, the URL is wrong, so I figured cobaltnet.com easily enough.. But
there's no oracle files I can find on the site.. I'd like the new kernel,
anyone know where it lurks??
That aside, I've had enough experience installing Oracle to know that under
Linux, you don't REALLY need to modify the kernel.. it works okay without
it, especially in this circumstance..
I managed to find the JDK on java.sun.com, no problem, and then I get to
this..
2.2 "Use ftp to login to your RaQ 3i as the administrator. Transfer the
following files to it from http://www.oracle.com:
vmlinux.gz
xfree-3.3.5-3.test.tar.gz
xpm-3.4k-test.tar.gz
jre_1.1.6.-v5-glibc-x86.tar.gz"
At this point, my eyes glaze over, my brain hops out to lunch, and my mouth
stammers out a "bwerglegleep.. HUH?"
Where exactly am I to find those files?? Certainly not on oracle.com, and
certainly my little command-line FTP is not going to magically FXP those
files into my RaQ even if oracle.com did have them.. The JRE I can find,
that's easy.. but a modified vmlinux.gz?? And test versions of X-Windows
sources?? HELP!!
Please help.. Where are these mystical files I require to get X-Windows
running on my poor little sacrificial lamb of a RaQ3i??
And yes, I know I could go run it all on another machine, but I don't need a
1.2 GHz massive server just to run a few Secure WebDB inquiries..
