My biggest list on a RaQ is around 800 members, with an average of 15 posts per
day and the list doesn't noticably affect server performance. You'll probably
want to consider using bulk_mailer to speed up delivery (it groups recipients by
domain name, creates an envelope for the recipients and sends the envelope to
sendmail). See ftp://cs.utk.edu/pub/moore/bulk_mailer. Using bulk_mailer is
quite easy - you just need to make a slight modification to the majordomo
aliases in your aliases file.
If list traffic is light to moderate and is spaced out pretty well you should be
in good shape even with 17k list members. You might want to check out the list
archives at the Majordomo site (http://www.greatcircle.com/majordomo/) and maybe
even post to the Majordomo list (find at previous URL) since that's the right
place to ask this question.
