First of all: this and any prior emails on this list are NOT official
Cobalt statements in any way.
I partly agree on it being a good idea to ship an OS CD with every
appliance. Unfortunately this is not the case and to omy knowledge this
won't change in the near future. Still I think that people often
mis-position Cobalt's appliances as plain Linux computers. Yes, it is a
computer and yes it runs Linux. But it's not just a marketing thing calling
it an appliance. Maybe I shouldn't have expressed myself this way, but I
hope you get the message.
The whole discussion started with someone complaining about his Raq not
functioning. If something I just bought doesn't work, I either return it to
where I bought it or call the manufacturer. Not complain in a usergroup
like this. Almost all calls into our EMEA support line are handled as they
come in.

Hello List,
I just had to respond to this Cobalt statement,
"Using a Cobalt APPLIANCE should not require a restore CD at any times.
See
it as an additional service. I guess you didn't get the circuit layout and
firmware bios of your microwave oven free of charge as well."
I worked technical support for the world's largest internetworking company
for 2 years. If I had ever given a response like this I would have been
fired immediately. What kind of customer support is this ? When we
purchased
Cobalt equipment, we paid for the hardware AND the OS running on it. Thus,
we should ALL be shipped the OS on CD as part of what we paid for. We can
upgrade for free via the Cobalt site, so why is it Cobalt charges us for
the
original OS CD ?
And I would think if the HD craps out, one might find the OS on CD helpful
instead of having to wait for a shipment from Cobalt...oh wait...that is
another fee service (Additional service) too isn't it ?
Come on Cobalt, the product is pretty good. Get the support in line or it
is
only a matter of time before someone does it better and you lose out.
Dear Mr. Chopot,
The normal Qube restore CD is only available in English. We do have two
versions for the Qube2, one in French and one in German.
The restore CD indeed is $99. It includes normal shipping. If you want to
receive it by Courier, the shipping costs are added.
Note these are prices handled by Cobalt Emea and these might not be
applicable in other territories.
Using a Cobalt APPLIANCE should not require a restore CD at any times. See
it as an additional service. I guess you didn't get the circuit layout and
firmware bios of your microwave oven free of charge as well. And in case
you need it and you haven't voided your software guarantee, we in Europe
provide it free of charge.

Hello
Does anybody know of a reseller I can purchase the Qube 2 restore CD from
in Europe ?
Does the CD cover all languages ?
Also (just stating my humble opinion), I was wondering what list members
think about having to pay $99 for a CD (shipping not included I am sure...)
? It's like buying a Windows PC and not getting the CD for windows.. Some
manufacturers were doing that but you had at least a disk image on the
HD... I don't mind paying for the shipping/blank-CD/time, but $99 sounds a
lot for something you already paid (the machine came with the OS..).
I agree that for people with a bunch of Raq's, $99 is not a lot/Raq, but
for one Qube..well maybe I am too cheap !!
TIA.
