would it be a good idea to continue this off-list ? it does not interest
anyone... if you treat people that aswer your questions like this, maybe
they won`t help you again...
if you find it absolutely necessary, you have to accept that some users
may ignore your posts in the future, especially if you try to attract
attention to your flamings by using inapprobriate subject lines.

i`m not sure if i understand what you`re exactly looking for. i assume
you want a possibility to examine certain files for certain regular
expressions, and a notification if they appear ?
i don`t understand why logcheck could be overkill ? it is a shell
script, similar to that one you would write by yourself, if you want
something more simple. (i don`t want to promote it five times, though
:-)
the only difference is that the expressions that cause an action or are
ignored are defined outside the script itself; so it gives everyone -
even without experience in writing shell scripts - the possibility to
adapt it to personal needs (like yours). in your case, you could strip
out most of the reg.exp. and insert only the ones that you are
interested in.
if you need a (technical) more simple way, the only one i could imagine
is "less logfile" and search the expression with "/", or downloading the
file and doing something similar on a local mmachine; not a very
practical one, though...
