Re: [cobalt-users] DSL/Cable for server?

You'd be much more likely to get a reply if you started a new thread.

Thanks.

That said... read response below...

Some people do this using a cable modem. Some people do it using DSL.
Some people even do it with a T-1. (Many ISPs originally went into the
business so we could cost justify to ourselves and our wives having our
own T-1 at home <smile>.) In fact, I run two mail-servers, all the
"user" websites for an ISP, and "shell" accounts from my home. I intend
to add a Windows 2000 "Advanced Server" (for FrontPage sites) at home
beginning in mid-August unless my colo-room buildout is done by then.

Here's what you need:

Bandwidth. Probably less than you think; an ISP I recently bought
operated for four years (ending June 1, 2000) on a 128 kb frame relay
connection.

IP#s. You need at least one static IP#, prefereably more, depending on
what you want to do.

Permission. Some home-broadband providers, most likely of cable and
iDSL connections, don't allow commercial use.

Reliability. Here's where I ran into a problem last month, with Zyan.
If I had room in colo I'd move all my systems there tomorrow, but I
don't.
