This is in addition to the fact that all mail in the mailq is backed up and giving 'hostname lookup' failures despite the fact that network services are otherwise working fine.
so maybe sendmail is failing on dns lookupwhat does nslookup say when you telnet to the box and run it with one of those that sendmail is having problems with ?
are you running dns local or do you have a Primary DNS Server Address and secondary upline that you have set under control panel network
