By figuring out what you are talking about before entering a conversation.
Examples in this case include: reading the list archives, hanging out for a
while. You aren't supposed to post in a mailing list until you have been
reading for a while if you don't want to alienate yourself. This is one of
the first things the used to tell 'newbies' back in the day when you got
pamplets like 'how to get started on the internet' from your ISP.
A brick and mortar analogy would be if I ran down to the city council
meeting and started yelling my comments about things without following the
proper procedure. How do I find out what the procedure is? By looking up
parliamentary procedure, or by hanging out long enough for me to figure it
out by osmosis. No one would cut me any slack in that environment, as many
don't in this one.

It *doesn't matter*. It is just one example of how HTML isn't as portable
as ASCII text.
