I found the answer:
The message is created when IMAP is used to access the mail, but IMAP does
not display it in the list of mail items - since it knows about it and does
not want it deleted.
However, when POP3 is also used to access the mail, this message is read by
it and, if POP3 is set to not leave copies of mail on the server, the
message will be deleted from the server. So, next time IMAP is used to
access the mail, the message will be recreated (as it says in the message).
Conclusion - the mail is being accessed using both IMAP and POP3 and, when
IMAP creates this message (for its own purposes), POP3 removes it again (and
it shows up amongst the mail read by POP3).
Thanks to all
