It really depends on the Cable provider. Mine, for example, provides a 128k
upstream which is enough bandwidth to serve about 3 simultaneous users (at
most). It helps to know the transfer stats (estimated) of the sites you'll
be hosting.
Best case, they provide you about 512k, which you can server a reasonably
large amount off of. But the big problem I have found with cable is that
latency (that last mile) is way lame. Its like 50ms or so from me to the
first real router on @home's network. Also most cable providers won't
gaurentee you any bandwidth. So you are on a shared connection, in most
cases and you get what you get as far as bandwidth.
Really the best way to go is to co-locate with someone like rackspace.com or
digital nation. Advantages include: fire suppression, power protection
(short-term and long-term), climate control, redundant routing, bandwidth on
demand, dedicated bandwidth available.
There are really very few cases where co-location doesn't make sense.
