Reply-To: cobalt-users@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
hi - this is a first time posting, and from a newbie ! so please excuse me
if the questions are too basic !
we have just taken up a cobalt server, and are trying to get the DNS working
!
i want that
NS.MYDOMAIN.COM > point to my machine where i want to have MYDOMAIN.COM
NS2.MYDOMAIN.COM >
I got the Raq2 with the following informaiton :
Primary IP address : 207.230.127.188
Gateway: 207.230.127.129
IP addresses: 207.230.124.192
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Currently I have changed the information at Internic for the host
information
so that NS.MYDOMAIN.COM => 207.230.127.188
and NS2.MYDOMAIN.COM => 207.230.124.192
I have also used the GUI to set up MYDOMAIN.COM and WWW.MYDOMAIN.COM on the
server.
i have read the cobalt guides and have diligently followed the
instructions. What the guides do not mention is how do i get the
NS.MYDOMAIN.COM set up and working on the machine. It does show the
NS2.MYDOMAIN.COM which is set up.
I have the A entries made too !! And i have also changed the entries on
Internic for the nameserver IP addresses to use the two IPs iindicated
above.
Please help!!
Is there a newbie guide someplace?? Maybe i shall add to the guides once i
am through :-)
Thanks and best wishes!

Hi,
I've set this up for several users by editing the /etc/aliases file by
hand. (save a backup copy first)
All the addresses then show up in the GUI ..in the forward to box for that
user. You can remove all these addresses using the GUI but you can't just
subtract one that way.
These hand additions have never been accidentally overwritten by anything
the GUI does.

add two ip`s for one host (that constists of two real hosts) :
raq1.domain.tld IN A 111.111.111.111
raq2.domain.tld IN A 222.222.222.222
i don`t know if the gui lets you do this.
however, do not expect anything that you can call high availabilty, if
you want to to this. if one crashes, for every second request, the dns
leads you to the dead one.

Hi
If you have virtual sites connected to one ip-adress you will only see the
1st(main) site if you use http://IP.../user.
To see the other sites you have to create/edit the hosts file.
On linux/unix systems it's /etc/hosts.
On dos/windows systems it's /windows/hosts.
the lines to accomplish what you want should be in the form ipno. <space>
domainname.
example: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx www.xyz.com
Hope this helps.

Yeah you'd be SOL unless you took the HD out and put it in another box.
I'd leave telnet running and use hosts.allow and .deny

If a client wants their site live on the web before the domain name records
point to
my name server in DNS, I do the following. Create the site with a host of
"clientsdomain" and a domain of "mymaindomain.tld". If you've already setup
the
site, go back to teh GUI and make the change. Then the site can be viewed
at
clientsdomain.mymaindomain.tld. Be sure to add an A record in your DNS
also. If you
are comfortable in the server shell, open httpd.conf, add a line:
ServerAlias
www.clientsdomain.tld clientsdomain.tld in httpd.conf, then restart
httpd.conf. I
believe it's /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd restart (from memory).
When the client's domain name is live in DNS, change the configuration in
the GUI to
www.clientsdomain.tld and drop the ServerAlias lines.

Disabling telnet is not a bad idea as it sends everything in clear text. I
would
recommend installing SSH (which sends data encrypted) before disabling
telnet. If
you have an old roomate who uses her key to break into your house you don't
board up
the house (disable telnet), you install new locks (SSH). I don't know
offhand where
to get SSH, but I think there might be an RPM on Cobalt's site somewhere.
If not,
google is your friend - type "SSH" into google.com and I bet the main SSH
website is
one of the first three listed.

Greetings List,
I recently enabled Front Page on my first Cobalt site. It seemed to have

Yeah I'd use SSH if the SSD daemon didn't have so many buffer overflow
problems. Look at www.lwn.net security section, yet another exploit was
found in openSSH. Come on guys...

Tim,
That error usually occurs when the mailbox of the user is corrupt.
Most of the time there is a > in front of FROM looking like:
>From blah@xxxxxxxxxxxx Wed Jun 15 12:28:23 2000
Take away the > and then that should fix that error and allow the mail to
be downloaded.
The POP server qpopper, that comes with RaQ servers is of an older version
and should be replaced. Bugs like this have been fixed. There's also a
security problem with it.
You can find the latest BETA code or latest STABLE release of qpopper here:
ftp://ftp.qualcomm.com/eudora/servers/unix/popper/
Hope this helps...

I would have known what you meant. Interesting - the email you are
referring to
hasn't arrived yet.

I wasn't aware of the buffer overflow problem when I installed SSH many
moons ago,
but I'm going to continue to use it.
>From http://www.lwn.net/2000/0615/security.php3: "A new release of OpenSSH
has been
announced. This new version, 2.1.1, contains a security fix for a
vulnerability in
OpenSSH that may exist if the UseLogin feature is enabled (not enabled by
default)."
Notice that it says the vulnerablity is for a feature that is not enabled by
default.
I'm not worried about that at all. There very well could be other exploits
of SSH,
but I'm still sticking with it. I'll risk a few exploits over the
alternative of
sending my passwords clear text. To each his/her own.
