I am pretty sure that the recovery cd's check to make sure it is on the
right peice of equipment.
You can certainly install the same kernel, packages, apache whatever on a
PC. But I don't think that it would be worth engineering all that just to
test out some scripts/what not--and I certainly don't think it would be more
cost-effective than just buying a Raq3 and using it as a development or
test/qa server.
What software are you thinking of installing? Do you currently have a
development server that you are using to develop this software?
