Mark, let me explain how I and a lot of other experienced users read mail.

With the space bar.  It's fast.  Press the space bar to scroll down through 
the message, when you hit the end, you go onto the next mail.

This way you can get through a lot of mail.  Now if *you* leave hundreds of 
lines of quote in there, then loads of other people sit there banging
the space bar, wasting time, getting on to the next mail, just because
*you* haven't bothered to spend a little bit of time formatting well.
