Re: [cobalt-users] Real World Qube 2 and such

One other point I will add to what Malcom said. The design of the Qube2 is
such that it comes with a built in administrative GUI. You can have mail, ftp,
telnet, mailing groups, web pages (with its own built in web page editor), and
so on. The basic system has been heavily modified to support the Cobalt GUI.
So long as you are satisfied with the features provided and do not wish to
make a lot of changes to the system, then you will most likely be happy. A
great many users buy it, turn it on, and forget about it. Also, if you make
changes and wish to get warranty technical support from Cobalt you will
probably be asked remove the changes (changes void the warranty).

One of the problems that I have run into is that its support of FrontPage
extensions is extremely limited. I.e., individual users accounts cannot use
them in their home directories nor can you have them turned on in other groups
you may establish other than the built in home group. Hence, you may wish to
look at the included web page editor or plan on using ftp to publish web
pages.

The Cobalt does not come with SSH support, but users on this group have make a
pkg available (experimental, voids the warranty, etc) that some have
installed.

I have 2 Qube2's but am not sure exactly where I will go with the product. I
use one pretty much as a right out of the box CD server. The other I use for
standard server functions. It would make my life a lot simpler if FrontPage
extensions were not so limited. I am doing manual workarounds, but it is a
pain.

That said, keep in mind that the Qube2 is sold as an appliance (much like a
toaster). If one is satisfied with the built-in features, then you will be a
happy camper.

BTW, if you get one, join us on the Qube list.
