[cobalt-users] Raq3 SMTP Issue

I have a Raq3 hosting one domain. The SMTP keeps going down on a daily
basis. It tends to go down during non-peak hours (midnight to 6AM). For
example today it went down at 3:15A, 4:15A, 5:00A, 7:15A, 8:30A, 10:15A, and
2:15P. This seems to be a daily occurance for the past 2 weeks. The logs
show that SMTP went down but not why they went down. I get a message with
the following information:
"The SMTP (mail) server appears to be down. The mail server may shut itself
down temporarily under extreme load, so you should also check the CPU load
on the server. If the load does not appear to be the problem, try turning
mail service off and then on within the Cobalt server Control Panel to see
if
this corrects the problem. If not, try rebooting the server itself. If
this
still does not correct the problem, contact Cobalt Technical Support."
The CPU load is normal. Turning SMTP on anf off does nothing. Rebooting does
not solve the problem either.
We are running the Raq3 on a 256K SDSL line (soon to be increased to 1MX1M)
with a R7100 Netopia DSL Router with a basic firewall. We are also using
NAT. The server IP is excluded from NAT and the virtual domains have a local
address.
Any ideas on why the SMTP keeps going up and down?
Also, sometimes it takes 2 to 4 hours or more to receive an email. We have
done testing by sending an email to myself. Some come through right away and
others take a long time.
Thanks.
