The wholesaler we are using at the moment (soon to be eliminated) sets all
of our domains up with a pointer to a subdirectory within their SSL site. It
shows up on all of our domains as a subdirectory that we can use just like
any other subdirectory, except that it is pointing to a secure site. That is
basically what you are doing here and it sounds right to me.

I asked the same question last week, no response. What I did was setup
ssl.hostdomain.com and provide 1mb ssl accounts from that. Beleive it or
not, domains on the same IP address as ssl.hostdomain.com can access
https://www.theirdomain.com/~ssl_username
