[cobalt-users] Intalling Patches

I want to install some patches for my RaQ3 but am afraid it might mess up my 
configuration...

I have edited the following files manually:   passwd, proftpd.conf, 
httpd.conf (to add ssi parsing of .htm and .html files)

Any idea if the patches will mess up my my configuration or my user 
information?  Any pre-cautions I can take to protect myself?  If I backup my 
data and it messes things up can I just use the backup or do I have to 
re-format the server to factory settings then use the backup?

Has anyone experienced difficulties in installing patches?
