I don't believe it is. I think you can still mount and read the partition; you
just won't have journaling support for it.

The RAID option on the 550 is selected at system restore time, based on the
number of disks in the system -- if there's only one disk, you are not
presented with a RAID choice. If both disks are present, you are prompted to
choose either RAID 0 or RAID 1. I don't know if there's a "no RAID" option if
there are 2 disks in the system...
