It's their choice.  The majority (of voters) are in favor of the move. :)

That's approximately the same number of people who would subscribe.  Is
that enough for a list to be as viable as this one, with over a
thousand subscribers has been?  I don't think so.

People can "vote" by subscribing to the new list. It's up to them to decide whether they wish to keep the mailing list as a resource or not. The list will be viable as long as there are people answering the question and providing help. If they do nothing then this list will be another Cobalt EOL.
