[cobalt-users] RE:Watching the logs...

I was wondering if anyone knew of a way or knew of a program that would
watch my logs for certain things then e-mail me when it finds it. What I am
trying to do here is get hack attempts and admin logins sent to an e-mail
address. Our raq2 has been hacked by outside sources twice in the past 3
months. I cannot figure out how they are doing it. I contacted the
authorities but you know how that goes. I want to have failed login attempts
and admin attempts sent to e-mail. I do have logging tools in place but they
are only good if I sit there and watch the logs all of the time.
 Can anyone help on this?

Hello,

Would anyone know why I receive this error message
daily from my system? It's an RaQ3 and Cobalt recently
went in and disabled the log files because of the bug.
I started recv'g this message the following night.
Where are the FTP logs files located? I'd also like to
look at the file that's called when the "list" command
is envoked, where is it stored?

Thank you for your help

This looks like a known error in the way the RaQ3i writes to
virtusertable.

This was addressed by Cobalt-employee Duncan laurie <duncan@xxxxxxxxxx>
Wed, 16 Feb 2000 10:41:58 PST in a post "[cobalt-users] raq3 catch-all
alias problems (& solution)", but his fix, as denoted in that post, has
disappeared from his ftp site.

Which is a problem, since I needed it tonight for a client <frown>.

As I recall, it was the method of choice with the earliest slackware
distribution of linux using Linux kernel 0.99. I could be mistaken
though; it's been years.

Or maybe it was an early Kernighan & Ritchie implementation <sigh>.

See the source code for "www.allyfarson.com/html/mainpage.html". It's

Known hotmail problem. Their servers are quite busy.

Many lists refuse to sign up hotmail addresses for this very reason.

This is kinda mysql question, but I assumed maybe someone in this
forum could answer it.

I have successfully installed PHP and MySQL on
my Raq3 but for some reason when I try to create a database or perform
simple mysql admin commands I always get a syntax like...

ERROR 1064: You have an error in your SQL syntax near 'mysqladmin
version' at line 1

Thanks for the help!

Perhaps "illegal" is too strong a word.

I was going to write you and let you know it wasn't a good idea to
explain the reason you were suspending the site.

I chose not to.

Perhaps I was wrong.

Collection law is quite specific, does vary from state to state, and in
many states if you don't follow the law you lose your right to collect.

IANAL, but OPMA (other penalties may apply <wry grin>).

I have an Raq2 server that host appr 150 virtual sites.

Lately I have discovered a problem with e-mail aliases. If several domains
have the same e-mail alias example: info@xxxxxxxxxxx
info@xxxxxxxxxxx
info@xxxxxxxxxxx

If I send an mail to info@xxxxxxxxxxx the mail sometimes is received by
info@xxxxxxxxxxx or info@xxxxxxxxxxxx

Anyone has an idea what could be wrong?

Best reg.

Try again.

a) do you have a Qube 2700WG?
b) if so, do you have all the latest software patches?
c) if so, what is in your /var/log/maillog?

I do not have a Qube2, just a Qube, but AFAIK you could edit /etc/aliases

Reply-To: cobalt-users@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

hi,

just some words about your relay problem.

"relaying denied" DOESN'T check the sender's e-mail address. it checks if
the sender's ip-address/hostname is in the "Relay E-Mail for these domains"
list, and nothing else. that's all.

>I created an account "test" for a vitual site "site.com". When I log in
>to the RaQ as "test" I can send mail to other domains using
>/var/lib/sendmail -v somebodyelse@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

that's right. the server itself (meaning, a person who is logged into it)
can _always_ send e-mail.

>But, when I try to send mail through the server using Netscape I get the
>"relaying denied" error. I'm connected to my ISP via
>"pm2-02.lituus.net"

yep. and i think this address isn't in your list of domains being allowed
to relay. looks like a dynamic hostname / dynamic ip, so don't try to add
it to the list. that wouldn't work. next time you'd have another address.

>In Netscape preferences I make these changes: [...]

they're all okay, i think.

>So the email address I set in Netscape is 1) ignored or 2) not used as
>the sender's address, or 3) rewitten to pm2-02.lituus.net.

1) is right (IMHO). the sender's address is ignored. if you are allowed to
relay, you just can send mail as "hotline@xxxxxxxxxxxxx" or something else,
if you want to. doesn't matter.

yes. it's easy if you have a static ip. or use the pop-before-relay package
- that does the trick for every other user. if you dunno where to find, how
to install and how to work with it, please read the archives. there are
loads of postings on it.

>Doesn't that

as the raq3 manual tells: "some users advise you to open relay to all com,
edu, net and other top-level domain addresses. this is BAD ADVICE". don't
open your mailserver to .aol.com. it's stupid. pop-before-relay works fine
and is the best solution for roaming users like you.

in the past few days, I

- saw webmin (i am impressed, as we (me and my opera browser)
don`t like the graphics and javascript intensive admin panels
of the cobalt)

- saw an advert of the new ibm netfinity 4000r servers
(i think i`ll like it except the price)

- and heard about debian d-lite for isp`s...

that could be an interesting combination for my next server...
(even if i`m -relatively- happy with my Raq3)

btw: does anybody know about the e-smith server distribution ?

no. you can have only one ssl presence per *IP*, not per *machine*. we use
this solution on many raq's, and it works fine.

Yes I have a username info on one of this accounts and as alias on the other
accounts, will it solve the problem to delete the accounts with the name
info and only have the email adress info as alias on all accounts?

That should do it. Anytime you have a generic user name, any mail addressed
to generic_name@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx on your RAQ, (or any Linux virtual server
AFAIK), will end up in that users box without some kind of extra mail
processing such as Procmail. It's best to use specific user names tied to
the domain or site# and only use aliases for the generic names.

I also installed all of the updates and the most recent update gave me a
problem. We are an ISP and I did the update and it said I needed to reboot,
so I did. It took over 20 minutes for the raq to come back up? I have no
clue whats going on . Now I am afraid to reboot the raq again because I am
not sure if it will come back up again or not. I also am having some little
problems since the updates but I am not sure if it is related to the actual
updates or not.

if you put your extra VirtualHosts in separate files and include these

That never happend to me. But I always put extra VirtualHosts in

If cobalt is listening... maybe it's time that all of these patches and

You can check (as root) with: rpm -q glibc

Did you rebuild the aliases database? ("newaliases" as root will do that)

I've been told that the RaQ3 can only have one SSL certificate per machine
and other sites that use it will have to be piped through the main domain.
Is this true? If it is, do I have to create a subdirectory in the main site
(i.e. - https://www.site1.com/site2/) for the other site that needs SSL? If
I try to run the other site through SSL (i.e. - https://www.site2.com) I get
errors about the domain name being different form the one the cert is
registered to.

Hi,

This looks like the same problem we have come across lately.
We found that even though we checked off "Accept Email for Domain" for
the domain to receive email, it didn't. So we unchecked it, and
manually entered it in the hosts/domains aliases.
That seemed to make it work, but I don't feel comfortable with this
solution. It more like rolling dice to see which combination worked.
What else is affected by that checkbox, anyway?
And what is the truly 'proper' cobalt way to put IPs/domains in the
Relay and Aliases boxes of the Email Parameters administration?

This was for a virtual host on a RaQ3i. We would like this to be
more predictable before we migrate more websites.

Thanks for any help.

Did you install the updates in numerical order?
Some updates only work correctly when the previous updates are installed!

We have a Qube 2700WG, which is used as our mail server. An important
feature of the mail service for us is the ability to forward mail and keep a
copy on the server. I'd like to do other things with it, such as run an
LDAP service and DHCP, but am hesitant about installing these, due to my
inexperience with Linux, Perl, etc. - I'm learning more as I have
opportunity, given my other responsibilities.

We also have a Qube2, which is used only as an FTP server outside our
firewall - I know it has many improved features over the 2700WG, including a
DHCP server. I'd like to swap the machines, but the Qube2 falls down on not
being able to forward mail and keep a copy on the server.

And, in my testing of the Qube2, I was not happy with the way it handled
mail to groups and mailing lists. I've gathered from this "cobalt-users"
list that I needed to be patient, ie. wait for half-an-hour for it to be
delivered - not really acceptable after not having to wait with the 2700WG.
And then, I gather, the reply address for those is not the sender, but the
group or mailing list - again, not acceptable. Mail clients allow "reply to
all" to get the latter effect - but that causes problems when the reply
address is not the sender, as noted many times in the past by this
"cobalt-users" list.

Regards, Rob Evans

hi all,
I've been browsing the cobalt list in search for this answer. I've seen
the qestion being asked several times, but no answer.

Maybe somebody got it working, the question is:

I installed SSL on a rqa2 for our main site, and it works really good, now
I got a certificate for a virtual site, but I haven't been able to
configure the virtual site for the secure server.

any pointers in how to do this is greatly appreciated.

TIA

Do you have a Qube or Qube2? As I remember from Oren's full message, the pkg
is ONLY for the Qube2.

That's right but if you look at the subject, I asked about the ORIGINAL
qube, so your response pointing me to the solution for the QUBE2 was
confusing to me.

Yup.

I filter out everything that doesn't have a "Q" on the subject line. =

I installed mySQL, but in order to get DBI and mysql.pm
working I needed to load the source and rebuild it...

But for the most part I like mySQL and it seams to
work we'll on my RaQ3

rpm --rebuild /home/sites/home/MySQL-3.22.32-1.src.rpm

rpm -Uvh --force /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/MySQL-3.22.32-1.i386.rpm
rpm -Uvh --force /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/MySQL-client-3.22.32-1.i386.rpm
rpm -Uvh --force /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/MySQL-devel-3.22.32-1.i386.rpm

A few days ago, the message is in the archive.
Someone form Cobalt promised to release an installation package for Oracle.
Hope that helps some! I use PostgreSQL as it is already on the RaQ.

You can set them up through the GUI, whithout any problems, just like
another
site. Instead of "www" you just need to give another host/subdomain name.
You
can also use the same IP for all subdomains if you would like to.
