Re: [cobalt-users] Status of the Cobalt Mailing Lists

Hello,

I think that it is time for these lists to go away. Several reasons for this:

I wish Sun would reconsider their decision to close down this mailing list. Although the products have reached their End of Life, there are still a lot of users out there using Cobalt products. Most of the subscribers do not view the forum at http://cobalt-forum.sun.com/forum/ as a substitute for this mailing list.

I would like to ask you to at least keep the archive online if Sun goes ahead with their decision to close this list. Alternatively, could you leave it online until the end of the month to allow people to download the complete archive?

For privacy reasons, I object to have the list of subscribers transferred to any unofficial mailing list that may be set up as a replacement. I suggest that you send an email with a list of the various lists that have been set up and let the subscribers decide which one(s) to join.

Having several lists is not in the interest of the Cobalt community and can only create a fractured community. Some of the people hosting mailing lists offer Cobalt related services. Their competitors may not like the idea of the person taking control of the whole list.

To the people offering an alternative to this list, I would like to ask about whether your list will have the same charter and be like this one. Given that you are using your resources to host the list, you may be inclined to add an advertising tagline to each email. :) It may be difficult to resist the urge to unsubscribe people who do not follow RFC 1855. :)

I would like to thank the people who have offered packages for free. We take it for granted and we sometimes complain when we see them selling Cobalt services. There is a cost for each download and we should understand that they can only recoup that through the services they sell. I would also like to thank Sun Cobalt for releasing the source code. This has helped in creating packages and maintaining existing systems.

Thank to you all, past and present, for answering my questions over the years. This list and the archive has been an invaluable resource to understand how the blue box works.
