I would consider it a safe bet that the hard drive was causing the
problem in that case.
Although I suggest you try and set the machine up in what would be
normal operating conditions just to make sure it's behaving before
shipping/dropping it back off to a data center.
Is the physical heat difference between the hdd's high enough for you to
say the old drive was getting way to hot ?
But by the sounds of it you may have found your problem.
